Looking after your tyres

We know how important it is to keep your tyres in the best condition possible. Having the correct tyres doesn’t only mean your car is more fuel efficient and performs better; it means you’re safer on the road too.

Tyres are the only part of a vehicle which are in contact with the road. Acceleration, braking, cornering and steering safety all depend on a relatively small road contact area. So it is extremely important to have well maintained tyres with a tyre tread depth above the legal limit to ensure maximum safety and performance.

The legal tread limit in the UK is 1.6mm across 75% of the tyre. Not having the legal limit of tread on your tyres can cost you up to £2500 and 3 points!

If you’re not sure how to check your tyre tread or simply want some advice on tyre selection for your vehicle, call into one of our John Roe centres today. We can also check your tyre pressures for you at the same time!

Tyres need attention too – Here’s 5 ways to check your tyres

1. The Coin Test

You’ve more than likely heard about checking your tyres with a 20p piece. If not it’s an actual thing and here’s how to do it. Place your 20p coin into the main tread grooves of your tyre. If the outer band of the coin is hidden by the rubber, then your tread is above the legal limit of 1.6mm (within the central three quarters of the tread). Which means it’s time to get new tyres

2. Tyre Match

All your tyres should have the same tread pattern and make.

3. Wheel Wobble

You could need your tyres balancing or replacing if you’re experiencing your steering wheel vibrating at 40-50mph.

4. Steering pulls

Have you noticed your car is veering in one direction? It’s more than likely your tracking is out but it could be uneven tyre pressures or your front tyres tread not matching. Either way come see the team and we’ll find the issue.

5. Sidewall damage

Had your tyres for a while and think they’re hanging on in there? Your tyres might say something different, check the sides of your tyres for cracks, splits or blisters as these are also a sign your tyres need replacing

Stay flexible

Make sure you have the right tyres on the road this winter.

Staying safe can be challenging  during the Winter as the wintery conditions make the roads unpredictable. Snow, slush, ice (and black ice) plus freezing fog, wind and rain can make even the shortest journey a hazardous one.

Why not bring your Toyota into John Roe for a free tyre check and get our tough Winter tyres.
